Why I Stopped Participating In Permission Based Professions
Licenses and certifications uphold a systemic sickness running rampant in our world. Sourcing authority from within is the universal remedy.
During a dinner party at my house earlier this year a man asked me:
“If you don’t certify them, how can you guarantee that they won’t hurt people?”
He was referring to the practitioners learning Kinetix with me, and asked his question after I shared that I intend to start a new kind of school, and that I don’t offer Certifications of any kind.
Dear friends,
We must break free of the many spells we are under if we want to nurture human health and freedom.
No certification or state sanctioned license can EVER guarantee that the person named on the piece of paper won’t hurt you.
Permission based professions - those that rely on an external authority to grant “permission” to work in a given field or operate under a given title - perpetuate a diseased system based insidiously on mistrust. We support state regulated education and the process of licensure (of doctors, for example) because we don’t trust the individuals themselves to develop their own skills, and vet themselves.
Too many people still believe that “proper training” ensures “safety.”
The fact of the matter is, we are constantly bombarded by state sponsored media with messages that we shouldn’t trust ourselves, or each other; that we are relentlessly under threat, and that we should trust the government to protect us from every conceivable danger.
We have been programmed to outsource our authority to systems that demonstrate, by their own acknowledgement and actions, just how dangerous they truly are - while being told to trust them (which is psychopathic behavior). Take the United States medical system:
An estimated 250,000 people die every year in this country from iatrogenic causes, or “routine medical errors.”
Another 128,000 people die every year from taking drugs that were prescribed to them by a licensed medical professional. These are not overdoses - these are people who took the drugs as prescribed, and died as a result. An additional 97,000 per year are dying from prescription drug overdoses.
Meanwhile, almost a million people per year (again, in the United States alone) are given drugs while hospitalized that have serious adverse side effects. Some of the time these adverse side effects lead to death, and yet are not recorded as the cause. This is what happened to my own father.
Late last December my dad asked my mom to take him to the hospital. He was a spritely 73 year old who took no medications and still had his mental faculties intact, but he started falling almost every day. Fear drove him to seek help. His naive expectation was that the doctors would scan his brain or conduct tests specific to balance; and he could go home right away to await the results.
Instead, he was strapped to a bed and given a cocktail of medications. Within a few short hours he was delirious, hallucinating and a shell of himself. The man who entered the hospital would never come back out.
My mom tried to get her husband out of the hospital immediately, but they refused to release him. Because of the paperwork they both signed when he was admitted, she was supposed to acquiesce to the hospital’s authority, relinquishing her own. While fighting with everything she had to get him out of there, they kept drugging him against her instructions not to - as his power of attorney. Bedbound and utterly transformed by medical abuse, my father finally got to go home three weeks later. He died on April 15th, 2023.
I’m guessing you know someone who has been harmed in a similar manner. Maybe that person was you.
The above numbers do not include the millions of people who take certain antibiotics, or undergo routine medical procedures - like cortisone injections and fusion surgeries - who end up in debilitating chronic pain. Fluoroquinolones, for example, are known to obliterate the body’s fascia and leave people in crippling pain. It’s called being “floxed.”
What about cancer treatments, or vaccines?
How many people die because of the chemotherapy and/or radiation?
How many children (and in the last three years - adults) are permanently harmed, or die, because of vaccines?
Our current medical system understands perfectly well just how deadly it is, which is why all of these licensed professionals - and the institutions who employ them - are protected from being sued. Every patient, before receiving treatment, must sign a legally binding contract (called a liability waiver) and consent to be treated per the institution’s policies (such as taking certain medications, being sedated or restrained, and undergoing tests that were never asked for).
When was the last time you actually read a contract you signed?
We are so used to signing away our rights that we don’t even bother to read the fine print.
Think about the last time you joined a gym, went to the chiropractor, got a massage or sought medical help.
Before we can even “get in the door” we are required to sign a document indemnifying them of all liability, even if we are seriously harmed or die because of their negligence.
Licensed professionals are absolved of responsibility for potential harms caused by their behavior, treatments or protocols through liability waivers and laws granting them immunity - as long as they follow the legal procedures mandated for their profession by the state regulation boards.
These are all examples of a sick system that thrives on mistrust and deferred responsibility; and the longer we uphold it, the sicker we become.
“They beat the curiosity out of me.”
Back in 2017, I began working with a man who had spent his entire career inside “the system” we’re talking about today.
Walking into my office on tentative legs with his head pressing forward, he was looking down at the ground while his feet shuffled across the floor and his arms were stuck by his sides, stiff as boards.
He was a 75 year old retired orthopedic surgeon, and he had used pills, shots and surgery to “fix” every problem that his body had expressed for decades, including ankle, knee, hip replacement and two spinal fusion surgeries. After trying every traditional medical route without seeing improvements in his pain, mobility and balance, he opened his mind to “alternatives” like me.
Within a few weeks of working together he was picking up his feet and walking with a pep in his step. He started holding his head higher, his arms started swinging, and he regained warmth in his lower legs and feet which had been ice cold for years.
This man became an unlikely favorite client of mine in all of my 15 years of private practice.
During every session, we would talk anatomy and physiology. Because of his results, he became fascinated by fascia, and since he had spent decades cutting through “that annoying white stuff” he knew exactly what I was talking about when I described what fascia is, and that it is almost as strong as steel.
One day, he told me:
“Talking with you every week has reminded me why I wanted to become a doctor. I forgot how much I love learning. I was always fascinated by the human body, but medical school beat the curiosity out of me.”
Human beings like this man, people who were once driven by curiosity, inspired to do good, and eager to learn skills that would serve their community - having gone through state regulated education indoctrination systems funded by the military industrial complex - have been reduced to rule following machines.
No matter the profession, if it is regulated by the state (or any centralized authority), then the license holder must obey the commands of the central authority, and relinquish theirs. And because this centralization of authority is the foundation of the whole system, clients and patients who seek help from this system are also expected to relinquish their authority; which they do, all too willingly.
We put “experts” on pedestals and expect them to be knowledgeable at worst, and miracle workers at best. We hand over our bodies, our minds, our money and our souls in exchange for the promise of salvation from inconvenience and suffering. And when these “experts” inevitably disappoint or harm us, we act genuinely shocked and betrayed. Some people react in rage, and then demand “benefits owed” from the very same system that betrayed their trust.
The truth will set us free.
Trust is the bedrock of a healthy system; mistrust is a symptom of disease.
Licensed “experts” are only trusted to the extent that they obey the commands of duty. They are expected to adopt the doctrine of their chosen field unquestioningly, pass the required tests, and mold themselves into acceptable representatives of the centralized authority governing their profession. If they disobey orders, they will be punished.
Follow the money and we will find that the centralized authority is almost always a corporate conglomerate that stands to profit in the billions or trillions from these professionals dutifully following orders.
Certifications are a weak imitation of licenses, and utterly worthless (in my opinion).
From what I can tell, the allure of titles is far more powerful than the hard work required to actually get good at something - which takes years of sweat and toil, trial and error, and messing up. A LOT.
It is the rare individual who transcends their training (or skips it altogether) to become exceptionally skilled. These people are driven by internal motivation rather than anything external, and you will often find them learning “in the dark” - early in the morning and late at night, without needing to tell the world so they can be acknowledged for their efforts.
For the person who sources authority from within, the learning itself is the reward. No other incentive - like a title, license or piece of paper - is needed. Most importantly of all, they trust themselves.
Initially, as the founder and teacher of Kinetix, I succumbed to the norm of offering certification. I didn’t (yet) trust my rebellious instincts. I very quickly regretted this decision, and put myself and Kinetix on a different path. I could have made a lot of money (and avoided a lot of challenges) had I stuck to the status quo. But I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself.
If I tried to mold my students into clones of me, I would fail them. And if I generalized the curriculum in such a way that every student got a piece of paper at the end, I would fail their future clients.
As a teacher, I consider it my job to nurture the unique gifts and talents of every student. This has proven far more difficult than I imagined, because most of us have been so thoroughly trained to outsource authority that we have no idea what to do when someone hands it back to us.
As adult students who went through state regulated educational systems as children, we don’t expect to assess our own talents, which would require that we honestly admit to our shortcomings as often as we celebrate the skills we’ve developed. We expect generalized curricula, tests, pieces of paper and titles. We expect to learn protocols and “if this, then that” rules (like: “if I release someone’s fascia, then their pain will go away”).
Reality is always showing us how delusional our thinking is - but only those who are ready will see the truth.
Self trust is the primary remedy for pain and illness. And only practitioners who trust themselves can guide clients towards the same.
I can’t take you somewhere I haven’t been myself.
If I am poor and always have been, I can’t teach you how to become rich.
If I outsource authority over my own body to “experts” other than myself, then I will allow you to outsource authority over yours to me, as the “professional.”
If I am unfamiliar with my body and how it functions, how could I possibly guide you towards understanding yours?
What I could do is repeat to you what I’ve learned in books or from teachers, and perhaps I believe the information to be true - but that doesn’t mean it is true, and it doesn’t mean I am familiar with my body and how it functions. It means I’m good at memorization.
Practitioners who intend to build their practice on a foundation of trust will have to choose between the titles and pieces of paper, or the grand adventure of earning knowledge through direct experience. Awaiting them on the path of true knowledge is a whole world of possibility.
No longer constrained to a single “scope of practice,” they will be free to address the whole human being based on its true nature. The only catch is, they will be responsible for everything. Unable to “prescribe” a single treatment or drug that falls under the purview of their prior profession, they will have to humbly submit to nature’s laws instead of man’s. And this kind of practice necessitates a new kind of relationship with clients - one that is based on truth and transparency.
This is the future of true medicine.
No two practitioners will ever offer the same service, because they are not the same person.
As clients/patients, we need to see past the titles and training to the individual in front of us. And then, we need to take responsibility for determining whether this particular individual can meet our needs. Whatever the outcome, we will take responsibility for it. We can only do this if we trust ourselves.
As professionals, we need to see past the symptoms and diagnoses to the individual in front of us. And then, we need to take responsibility for determining whether we can meet this particular individual’s needs. Whatever the outcome, we will take responsibility for it. We can only do this if we trust ourselves.
Permission based systems are only necessary because individuals lack self trust and therefore relinquish responsibility, preferring dependence on external authorities rather than souring authority from within.
Only when we’re ready to give up our victim mindset (and our addiction to blame) will we be able to create a new social system based on trust. We will have to voluntarily take risks - and make a lot of mistakes - in order to develop a society based on trust. And it will only work when we extend this same opportunity (to take risks and make mistakes) to everyone else.
This is the world I want to live in, and I am devoted to its manifestation.
Will you join me?
With love,
Elisha
Hi Ash, yeah me too - it’s really sad for everyone. I know that with rare exceptions none of the nurses or doctors are intending to cause harm. They’re caught in the same system and “have” to follow the rules or they would be fired. We need a mass exodus into a new system. Unfortunately I believe it will take more pain before enough people take that action.
Brava!!! Wow! Every word of this is priceless and so timely! My husband and I moved to Florida from Colorado 3 yrs ago. He's taken 2 years if Fascia release training, and is "unlicensed," yet an amazing practioner ! I have my massage license so I can practice Fascia release in this very over regulated state! There are SO MANY PEOPLE IN PAIN HERE..I'm booked 4 weeks out and need my husband d to take over flow, but because he is not licensed he cannot practice Fascia release. The state of florida massage board is draconian and often performs random surprise inspections and even poses as customers to try to catch you breaking the rules! Meanwhile my client are being jabbed, (vaccines, steroids,) fused..drugged and tossed to the many "Pain Management," clinics that line the streets here! It's
tragic! Thank you for this post and your work and commitment to Fascia freedom!
